Behind Their Closed Doors (A cabaret on a train)

Saturday, 21 Mar 2026

Coming soon to the Sydney Fringe Festival, 2026!

(run time approx. 50 minutes)

Synopsis:

“One train carriage, seven people, ten songs… everyone’s going to the end of the line, but what will they discover about each other and themselves along the way?”

This is an intimate and uplifting show about the big emotions, the shared struggles, and the ups and downs of life at different ages and stages in this great wide world we all live in.

Characters

GEN Z 1 (Ella), early twenties; Ella’s reeling from a relationship gone bad; it’s left her with an unhealthy relationship to food and a lot of anger and self-loathing. For her, the train ride is about travelling towards a renewed sense of confidence.

GEN Z 2 (Eli), early twenties; Eli’s a uni student who is staring into the gaping jaws of “real life” (a job, a mortgage, an overheating planet) and feeling like he’d rather just run in the opposite direction. He likes Ella though.

MOTHER, thirties; Mother is trying to keep a million balls in the air. She’s frazzled and starting to crack under the pressure… (she may or may not be in her pyjamas on the train). Can somebody just pour her a massive glass of wine, please?

ADULT 1 (Al), forties/fifties; Al is stained a sickly grey colour. They are in a deep state of grief. Will this train ride be the ticket to opening their closed door just a crack?

ADULT 2, forties/fifities; Adult 2 is caring for their elderly father. It’s wearing them down. They’ve still got time together, though, if they can figure out how to enjoy it.

OLDER PARENT, seventies; Older Parent is suffering from dementia, yet is surprisingly perceptive. Open and friendly, they act as an icebreaker for other passengers in the carriage.

PERSON WITH A DISABILITY, any age; If the other passengers can see past appearances, they will discover that this person is a keen photographer and artist, with a great sense of humour.
